Festival of Colors

The last couple of weekends, Kelsey and I have been working hard to clean up the house. Just a week ago we spent the afternoon in our backyard trying to clear up all the old leaves the previous tenants left from the fall time. 11 big black trash bags, 6 scratches from branches and rose thorns, and 3 hours later our backyard started to look presentable. We are still trying to figure out a way to get rid of all the bags of leaves we've acquired!

This weekend we dedicated to fun. We drove down to Provo for the Festival of Colors at the Hare Krishna temple in Spanish Fork. Let me tell you this was quite the experience if you've never been. People come and gather from all around (mostly college students in the area) to celebrate. I'm still trying to figure out the reason for the festival (something about spreading love to those who are different to us??) but I know I went to get covered head to toe with colored dust! The festivities included a band singing on stage (and all the songs had the same words "Hare Krishna" so it was easy to sing along), the burning of a witch on a bonfire, cultural dancing, and of course the throwing of colored powder.

Kelsey and I met up with our friend Richard and we got down to the center of the action. There was a big countdown and then everyone started throwing powder at everyone else. There was a huge dust cloud and surprisingly it got really dark for a full 2 minutes while we were getting covered in powder. I tried to hold my breath as long as I could.

I'm glad I brought my sunglasses to help protect my eyes. Next time I'll come with a cloth to cover my mouth and nose. We'll just say I had colorful boogers and spit for the next hour!

Here is a video we took while at the fetival:
